by The marathon in Sydney, Australia, will become the seventh 26.2-mile race in the annual World Marathon Major series.
The addition of Sydney was announced on Sunday during the New York Marathon, which is the last major marathon held each year.
Other annual majors are Tokyo in March (added in 2013), Boston and London in April, Berlin in September and Chicago in October. The Olympic Games, held every four years, and the World Championships, held every two years, are also considered major events.
The next Sydney Marathon will take place on August 31, 2025, two weeks before the men’s and women’s marathons at the Tokyo World Championships.
The World Marathon Major series, which began in 2006, aims to add two more races to reach a total of nine majors per year.
The Cape Town Marathon and the Shanghai Marathon could join as soon as 2026 and 2027 respectively, if each successfully passes two years of evaluating applications.
The World Marathon Major criteria include “all aspects of the runner experience, from exposure to the race course, the level of elite athletes recruited, all operational procedures, safety standards and much more” .
