Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff says Eddie Howe’s confidence is “the most important thing” behind his recent confident performances and that he is enjoying playing football after a change in “perspective”.

The Magpies have won all six games Longstaff has started this season, including strong performances in the last two against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

“The midfield group is really strong,” he told BBC Radio Newcastle. “When you look around, it’s just international matches. It’s just about trying to bring my strengths to the team.

“I know the manager trusts me, which is the most important thing. No matter what anyone says, the fact that he trusts me gives me the most confidence.”

Longstaff has had a grueling 2023-24 season, playing 46 games in all competitions, either side of an ankle problem, but believes the “burden” on him has been slightly eased.

“It’s funny,” he said, “the season we qualified for the Champions League, I tried to enjoy it as much as possible.

“Then last year there were games every three days and with guys injured I think the burden of trying to win every game can mean the fun goes away a bit.

“I’m 27, I think I have at most 10 years of football left and my perspective has changed a bit. I’ve also had a little boy now, so I’m just trying to enjoy the games as much. that I can and I hope that being a little more free will help the performances.”
