Here are The Commercial Appeal’s All-Metro boys and girls golf teams for the 2024 season.
Female Golfer of the Year
Catherine Bowie
Hutchison School, P.
Catherine Bowie is a player.
“When it counts, she will perform,” said her mother, Louisa Bowie.
It was the final day of the Division II-AA Girls Golf Championships in Sevierville on October 11th. Bowie knew she had a chance to win that day, but she didn’t check her position throughout the day. Why waste the moment, the place where she is happiest: on a golf course?
“I wasn’t going to try to put too much pressure on myself with the final score and the rankings,” Catherine Bowie said. “I have so much fun when I play big tournaments like this.”
It was only when her brothers rushed to her after the final putt that Catherine realized she had won everything.
“It was awesome,” she said.
The Hutchison freshman shot a 4-under 136 to win the state title and help Hutchison finish in third place as a team. His score was the highest score in Hutchison history and the seventh-best two-day total in tournament history. Bowie is The Commercial Appeal’s Women’s Golfer of the Year.
A move to golf, after two years playing softball, and a move to Spring Creek Ranch Golf Club in Collierville launched what could be a tremendous high school career.
“She completely fell in love with the place and then fell in love with the sport because of it,” Louisa Bowie said.
The love of golf evolved into daily visits to the course, chipping and 9-hole competitions with all participants on a given day. According to her mother, she even won a brand new putter when a man at the course bet she couldn’t beat him on a back-9. It’s precisely the competitive spirit that makes Bowie special.
After finishing ninth at state as an eighth grader and first as a freshman, Bowie has no plans to slow down.
“Oh yeah, I’m going to win the next three years,” she said.
All-Metro Women’s Team
Hana Barbier
St. Mary’s, Sr.
Barber placed second at the Division II-AA women’s golf tournament, shooting a 1-under 139 in two rounds and helping St. Mary’s finish first as a team. The Turkeys were the only Memphis-area team to win a state golf title this season. Barber had a 9-hole average of 36 for the season.
Jada Lynn
Sainte-Marie, 8th grader
After winning the middle school golf title last spring, Lynn was one of three St. Mary’s middle school girls to join the varsity team this fall. She was among the top players on the state title-winning team, averaging 37.5 for nine holes. She placed third at the Division II-AA girls state golf tournament, shooting a 4-over 144.
Claire Todd
Evangelical Christian School, Sr.
The standout Eagles senior shot 3-over, 143, in two rounds of the DII-A state tournament to finish fourth, also helping ECS to a fourth-place finish. Todd plans to sign with Memphis.
Isabelle Shannon
Arlington, then.
Shannon placed 10th at the Class AA state tournament after shooting an 11-over, 151, in two rounds. Her best results of the season include winning the Dragon Invitational and winning as district and regional champion.
Marie-Caroline Wagoner
St. Agnes, Jr.
Wagoner had a nine-hole average of 40.7 this season for St. Agnes. She shot a 15-over 155 at the Division II-AA girls state golf tournament, placing 11th.
Male Golfer of the Year
Charles Snider
University School of Memphis, then.
MUS golf coach Cliff Frisby didn’t quite have the words to describe Charles Snider’s balance, but he knew it was special.
“He’s pretty shy,” Frisby said. “All his words are on the golf course. When he gets engaged, he can play.”
Snider narrowly missed selection for the Frisby regional team as a freshman. A year later, Frisby described his standout sophomore as a more aware player. More confident than ever. Confidence and composure reached a new high during a September match at Timber Truss where Snider shot a 6-under, 30, through nine holes.
A month later, Snider shot a 5-under 139 to finish fourth at the DII-AA Men’s Golf Championships, with MUS placing second as a team. Snider maintained a nine-hole average of 34 throughout the season and is The Commercial Appeal’s Men’s Golfer of the Year.
“It means a lot because I worked pretty hard to show that it’s paying off,” Snider said of his award. “I want to bring state back to MUS as a team and try to win it individually.”
All-Metro boys team
Brantley Moore
MUS, then.
Moore averaged 34 through nine holes this season and finished 2-under, 142, to place fifth at the DII-AA Men’s Golf Championships, helping the Owls to a second-place finish.
